Food Justice
Call for ingredient donations!
By Bryony Ball
Bryony Ball is the co-founder of SLEEC and also a plant-based chef. Her work supporting survivors of sexual violence and gender-based violence, and her passion for food equality have led to this year’s Christmas mutual aid appeal for the project. Hear from Bryony about how you can donate.
I believe access to enough food and good meals is a right, not a privilege, and that we need to fight state violence and resist food injustice through collective care and solidarity. I often use wild plants and herbs in my food and hope to empower communities to build knowledge around accessible healing foods and plant medicine. As a survivor myself and someone who grew up without money and food security, I have lived experience of the issues I hope to support.
This Christmas, I will be offering free Christmas dinner packs to people in my communities and individuals who are facing financial struggle and surviving state violence or other forms of harm and oppression. This particularly focuses on: people living in safe houses, survivors of rape and sexual violence, ex-prisoners, refugees and asylum seekers, people experiencing homelessness, disabled people and people who have experienced trafficking and exploitation.
On Monday 18 December I will be making packs with dishes such as rosemary and red onion gravy, root veg mash and Christmas pie to keep in the freezer along with fresh veg ready for prepping on Christmas Day. If you are able to support with ingredient donations, please contact me on contact.bbskitchen@gmail.com.
SLEEC is a survivor-led organisation that changes conversations, supports survivors and dismantles the roots of male violence – find out more at sleec.net. To see more of Bryony’s food visit bbskitchen.net.
