New catering oven for the Super Supper Club
By Anya Agulova
Every week the Super Supper Club works in collaboration with Baggator to prepare meals using supermarket food that would otherwise be thrown away to make home-cooked meals and food boxes for those in need who have been affected by COVID-19. The latest Bristol Bites Back Better blog post is by Baggator’s Anya Agulova, celebrating the hard work of volunteers to get a new catering oven. Funds and/or food donations from individuals and local businesses are gratefully received for the project.
The Super Supper Club has a new oven! Though it seemed to take an inordinately long time to come through the pipelines, thanks to the perseverance of volunteers, no meals were missed. And thanks to the perseverance of Rachel Hodgson and her Super Supper Club working in collaboration with Stuart Phelps at Baggator, they are back cooking on gas once more!
Having had the previous oven nearly admit defeat and stop working altogether over Christmas 2020, everyone was grateful that a plan was already underway to bring in a new one. Some foresight had led to one of the volunteers at Super Supper Club mentioning to a friend at Burgess Salmon, the independent law firm, about the organisation’s need for a new oven.
Gathering together staff at Burgess Salmon, recognising the need for people to join forces and help the local community, they dug deep into their own pockets and between them raised sufficient funds for the purchase of a new catering oven.
At this point Nisbets, the supplier of catering equipment, stepped up and stepped in and ordered their best discount towards the cost of the oven.
After a little bit of a mix-up of orders, the oven finally made it to Baggator and Nick Emberton, local gas-safe engineer, came up trumps and once more fitted the oven. He’s becoming a familiar face at Baggator having come to the rescue and offering trustworthy advice when the site boiler broke down at the end of last year.
The final installation of the oven saw some very happy chefs and some very happy dining by all!
Rachel Hodgson, the main organiser of Super Supper Club, was able to breath a small sigh of relief before setting out to do the ever-growing food delivery round. She miraculously never dropped a beat and through some dedicated coordination was still was able to provide meals and weekly food supplies even without the use of a working oven. Though it was logistically hard going, she’s passionate about ensuring families are able to access good food and commits a large portion of her time to the cause.
Thanks again to the food donated by Pak Butchers and Sweetmart and the hard work of the volunteers who bring, cook and deliver the meals to those who are struggling to a or food this year.
Any funds and or food donations are gratefully received, and if you are a local business looking to support the community, why not get in touch with Rachel and the Super Supper Club to see what you can offer by way of support?
