Local Food Economy
Infrastructure
- A new ‘Made in Bristol’ Food & Drink products retail space is being created within St Nicholas Market with new food units due to start moving in from July.
- Food Talent Pathway has been working on creating artisan apprenticeships to fill a gap in the sector. This includes apprenticeships linked to bakeries, beer and baristas. Alongside this they have also been delivering barista training which has been receiving good levels of interest and is seen as a stepping stone job into the industry.
- Following the completion of a scoping exercise to understand the demand and practicalities of growing culturally diverse produce in Bristol, Feeding Bristol is now seeking funding for further research.
- Content development is underway for a new guide to sustainability for the hospitality sector. A mix of case studies and local listings, tools and resources will encourage local businesses to source locally, reduce carbon in their menus, waste less and care for their people. The guide will be launched in September and distributed to businesses across the city.
Procurement
- In June, the University of Bristol held its third event focused on local, sustainable procurement and catering in the region. This included a presentation from Entegra Procurement Services who have been commissioned to develop a new dynamic procurement framework designed to be an easy-to-use platform for all caterers’ onsite food and drink requirements. The aim is to introduce shorter, transparent supply chains that are more efficient and profitable for distributors.
