“How to be a Chef” Programme: Empowering young culinary talent

Are you aware of any young individuals who aren’t currently in employment, education, or training but have a passion for cooking? Square Food Foundation is excited to introduce an incredible opportunity designed specifically for them! Hear from Square Food Foundation’s Lucy Kane in our latest story.

Starting on 11 September 2024, our “How to Be a Chef” course is a comprehensive 12-week programme that runs until 5 December 2024, with a break for October half term. This hands-on course is perfect for any young person who dreams of a future in the food industry.

We are reaching out across the city because you might know someone who fits the bill. Whether they love to cook or are simply intrigued by the culinary world, this programme is a golden opportunity. What the course offers

  • Practical skills and experience: Participants will learn to cook a wide range of dishes using various ingredients, gaining the skills necessary for the hospitality sector.
  • Valuable certifications: Graduates will receive a Level 2 BTEC and a Food Hygiene Certificate, both highly regarded by employers in the food industry.
  • Exciting experiences: Our current students have enjoyed farm visits, a Bristol food tour, and hands-on event prep and service alongside their cooking lessons. They’ve also benefited from guest sessions with outstanding Bristol chefs.
  • Work placement success: Many of our students have completed fascinating work experience and have secured employment at renowned places like Bocabar, Kate’s Kitchen, and Watershed.

Course details

  • Duration: 12 weeks (11 September – 5 December 2024)
  • Schedule: Wednesdays and Thursdays, 10 am – 4 pm
  • Location: Square Food Foundation, The Park, Daventry Rd, BS4 1DQ
  • Capacity: Limited to 10 places to ensure personalised attention and a high-quality learning experience

Commitment and rewards

To make the most of this opportunity, participants need to commit to attending every session punctually. The course is demanding and requires dedication and energy. However, the rewardas are substantial, including payment for any external events they assist with and robust support in finding a job within their area of interest in the food industry.

Application process

Interested candidates will have the opportunity to meet one of our tutors ahead of the course start to tour the kitchen and get a feel for the programme. Interviews will be conducted on Tuesdays and Wednesdays throughout the summer.
