Bristol Eating Better Award: Help make Bristol healthier this festive season

By Ramona Andrews

Could your food business help make Bristol healthier and more sustainable? Sign up for a Bristol Eating Better Award and take positive steps towards improving the food you serve in time for the festive season.

Since launching in 2017, the Bristol Eating Better Awards have encouraged food businesses, schools and early years settings to make healthier, more sustainable food choices. As of September 2026, around 260 food businesses, 120 schools and 55 Early Years providers across Bristol are involved in the scheme.

Following a review of the awards, Bristol is renewing its call for more food businesses and educational settings to sign up and help make healthier, more sustainable food the easier choice.

Whether you run a café, restaurant, mobile food business or catering service, or provide food in a school or early years setting, you can make a difference. Small changes can have a big impact, from reducing salt, sugar and saturated fat in recipes to offering more fruit and vegetables, minimising food waste and sourcing ingredients locally.

By prioritising healthier ingredients and more sustainable practices, food providers can help children and young people develop healthy habits from an early age, while supporting the health and wellbeing of families and adults across Bristol.

There are Bronze, Silver and Gold awards to work towards, helping you recognise your progress and make improvements at a pace that works for you. Achieving the award can also bring additional benefits for eligible food businesses, including the opportunity to trade at Bristol City Council-run events, such as the Bristol Harbour Festival. Read more about how BEBA and Soil Association certifications are shaping the future of food at Bristol’s biggest festival.

The awards form part of Bristol’s wider ambition to build a healthier, fairer and more sustainable food system through the Bristol Good Food 2030 One City Framework for Action and One City Food Equality Strategy.
