Food Waste 2025-27 ACTION PLAN
What action is Bristol taking for good food between now and 2027?
What’s it about?
In Bristol, every 1.3 seconds, enough edible food is wasted to make a meal, and yet people across the city are experiencing hunger and food insecurity. Meanwhile, food sent to landfill and resources wasted in growing food for cities like ours that never gets eaten is fuelling the climate crisis. With around 80% of all food-consumption taking place in urban areas, cities like Bristol have a really important role to play in preventing food waste.
Working Group
The Food Waste Working Group meets quarterly and is made up of representatives from Bristol Waste, FareShare Go, FareShare SouthWest, Feeding Bristol, In Hope, Neighbourly, Resource Futures, University of Bristol, University Hospital Bristol and Weston NHS Trust, University of West of England.
The Food Waste Working Group believes cutting food waste is one of the most effective ways to tackle the climate crisis and food inequality. By reducing waste, redistributing surplus and improving composting, we can lower emissions, support communities, and make better use of our resources – building a fairer, more sustainable food system for Bristol.
Vision
Food waste and packaging waste is minimised.
Outcome 1: Household food waste going into black bins has reduced to under 10%
Outcome 2: Commercial food waste reduces and the volume of food waste recycled increases
Outcome 3: The volume of food surplus redistributed increases
Outcome 4: The volume of single use packaging reduces and reusable cups are the norm
These priorities are taken from Bristol Good Food 2030: A One City Framework for Action which aims to transform the city’s food system within this decade, supporting its ambitions on health, climate, biodiversity and social justice.
